How to Reset Your X Algorithm (and What Actually Works)

X has no reset button. How to clean up your For You feed with the Following tab, mutes, Interests and Not interested, and how creators reset an audience.

The short version

X has no reset button for the algorithm. Nothing in X’s Help Center or settings wipes your For You feed back to day one.

Here is what works. Switch to the Following tab for a clean feed now. Mute the words and accounts you are tired of. Remove stale Interests, unfollow Topics, and mark off-topic posts as Not interested. Then like and reply only to what you want more of. The feed is ranked on your recent engagement, so new habits slowly become a new feed.

Clean feed: Following tab

Is there a way to reset the X algorithm?

Not with one button. X’s page on how it recommends posts lists the controls you get: the For You and Following tabs, mutes, blocks, reports and “Not interested” feedback. A reset is not on the list. There is no reset in the settings menus on the app or x.com either, as of October 12, 2026.

Only a brand-new account starts from zero. That is a big price for a cleaner feed, because you lose your followers and history too. For most people, the controls below get close enough.

What your For You feed is built from

X published the code behind For You in xai-org/x-algorithm. Each time you open the app, it loads what it knows about you and gathers posts you might like. It filters some out. Then it ranks the rest by how likely you are to react to each one. Every control in this guide works on one of these four steps:

How X builds your feed on every refresh
  1. 1
    Your recent engagement
Likes, replies, clicks, watch time. The main input to the model
  2. 2
    Who and what you follow
Accounts, Topics and Lists you picked, plus posts from outside your network
  3. 3
    Filters
Mutes, blocks, muted words, posts older than 48 hours
  4. 4
    Ranking
    Predicted reactions, including Not interested
Simplified from the xai-org/x-algorithm README, checked October 12, 2026. The first step is the one you change by behaving differently; the third is the one that works instantly.

So a “reset” is really two jobs. Filters remove things right away. Changing what the model predicts takes new engagement. The model reads what you did recently, so new habits win over time.

How to reset your X algorithm, step by step

Do these in order. The first three clean the feed today. The rest retrain it as you keep using X. X does not say how fast, so give it at least a week before you judge.

  1. 1

    Switch to the Following tab

Tap or swipe to Following at the top of Home. It shows only accounts you follow, and X reopens whichever tab you used last. It now sorts by popular by default. On desktop, switch it to recent from the small arrow on the tab, per Axios.
  2. 2

Mute the words that keep showing up

Go to Notifications, tap the gear icon, then Muted, Muted words, Add. Turn on Home timeline, not just notifications, and pick Forever, 24 hours, 7 days or 30 days. Muting a word also mutes its hashtag.
  3. 3

Mute or unfollow the accounts behind it

Tap the more icon (three dots) on a post and choose Mute or Unfollow. Unfollowing drops them from Following, but X can still recommend their posts in For You. Muting hides them from both, and the other person is not told.
  4. 4

    Remove stale Interests

On x.com, open Your X data, then Interests and ads data, then Interests from X, and deselect what no longer fits. In the app: profile icon, Settings and privacy, Privacy and safety, Ad preferences, See your X data, then the same two steps. The list includes Topics X thinks you like based on your activity.
  5. 5

    Unfollow Topics you outgrew

On web, More, then Topics. In the app, Topics sits in your profile icon menu. Mark the ones you never want as Not interested.
  6. 6

    Retrain it for a week

Tap Not interested in this post (some versions say Show less often) on anything off-topic. Like, reply to and follow only what you want more of, and do not stop to watch the videos you do not want. Watch time and clicks count as engagement too.

For creators: resetting what X shows your audience

Many people searching for a reset are not tired of their own feed. They changed topic and want X to stop showing their posts to the old crowd. You cannot reset anyone else’s feed, but you can change who X matches your posts with.

To show your posts to people who do not follow you, the ranking code looks at what they engage with. It also looks at who engages with what. So one signal moves your audience: new people in the new niche engaging with your posts. Old posts do not hold you back for long, because For You only shows posts from the last 48 hours. You do not need to delete your old niche. One limit: For You also mixes in a shared list of popular recent posts, starting with the most-followed active accounts. That list does not come from your engagement. So some big-account posts show up whatever you retrain.

How your audience follows you into a new niche
  1. 1
    Bio says the new topic
Profile visitors know what they get
  2. 2
    Reply in the new niche
    Bigger accounts, every day
  3. 3
    New people engage
Replies and follows from that crowd
  4. 4
    X matches you to them
    And to people like them
The third step is the signal. Replies are the fastest way to earn it while your own posts still reach the old crowd.

A two-week niche reset for your account

  • Rewrite your bio to say who you help now. The free X Bio Grader checks it.
  • Follow 20 to 30 active accounts in the new niche, so your own feed shows you their conversations.
  • Reply to a few of their posts every day. How to do that without being the reply guy is in how to network on X.
  • Post in the new niche every day for two weeks. Bridge posts that connect the old topic to the new one keep the followers who might come along.
  • Run your own feed reset (the steps above) so your timeline is full of the new niche too.

Should you pivot this account or start a new one? That is a bigger call. I compare both, with my own numbers from a brand-new account, in start a new X account or change your niche. What the ranking rewards once you are posting, replies above all, is in how the X algorithm works now. If your posts were quiet before the switch, rule out the usual causes first with why your X posts get no views.

ClimbX helps with the posting side of a niche change. It drafts posts in your voice, based on what works for accounts a few times your size in the new niche. It also finds posts there worth replying to. You edit and post every one yourself.

Frequently asked questions

Can you reset your X algorithm?

Not with one button. X has no reset option for the For You feed. You can get close by switching to the Following tab, muting words and accounts, removing Interests in Your X data, unfollowing Topics, and marking off-topic posts as Not interested. Then engage only with what you want more of, because the ranking model reads your recent engagement.

How do I clear my For You page on X?

You cannot wipe it, but you can empty it of what you do not want. Mute the words that keep showing up (for Home timeline, not just notifications), mute or unfollow the accounts behind them, deselect Interests from X, and tap Not interested in this post on the rest. For a clean feed right now, switch to Following.

How long does it take for the X algorithm to change?

X does not publish a number. Mutes, blocks, unfollows and the Following tab work right away, because they filter posts before ranking. Not interested and new engagement work gradually, because they change what the model predicts you will like.

Does deleting the app or logging out reset the X algorithm?

No evidence says it does. The ranking model reads your account’s recent engagement, your follows, your mutes and blocks. None of that lives on your phone, so a reinstall starts the same feed again.

How do I reset what X shows my followers after changing niche?

You cannot reset other people’s feeds, but you can change who X matches your posts with. Update your bio, post in the new niche every day, and reply to bigger accounts there. Old posts drop out of For You after 48 hours anyway, so you do not need to delete them.

Does clearing my search history reset the X algorithm?

X does not list recent searches as an input to the For You feed, and the open-source ranking code does not list them in what it loads for each request. Clear them if you want a tidy search box, but do not expect the feed to change.

A clean feed shows you the right conversations. Your posts decide who stays.

ClimbX drafts posts in your voice from what works in your niche and finds conversations worth joining. You stay the one who writes and posts.
