The short version
To get followers on X (Twitter), reply to people in your niche every day, post one or two useful posts a day, and make your profile say what you post about. Replies get you found. Your posts and profile get you followed.
To gain followers faster, do more replies on fresh posts from accounts bigger than you. Skip buying followers, follow-for-follow, hashtags and links in your main posts. They add a number or cost you reach.
- 33 days
- 0 to 1,000 followers
- 6 to 9 days
- Per 1,000 after that
- 137 days
- 0 to 10,000 followers
- ~2 hours
- A day, early on
My own account (@DanielSmidstrup), started from zero on April 1, 2026.
The top Reddit answer says it starts and ends with content. Mostly right. But it skips how anyone finds your content when nobody follows you. On a new account, that is replies. Below is the whole plan by follower stage, with my real numbers.
How people end up following you on X
Almost every new follower takes the same four steps. If one step breaks, nothing after it happens.
- 1SeeThey read your reply under a post they care about
- 2TapYour reply is good enough that they open your profile
- 3FollowYour bio and last few posts show what they will get
- 4StayYour next posts keep that promise
So on a small account, more posts alone rarely help. If nobody sees them, nobody taps.
How long does it take to get followers on X?
The first 1,000 is the slowest. My account took 33 days to get there, then only 57 more days to go from 1,000 to 8,000.
- 1,000 followersday 33
- 2,000 followersday 40
- 5,000 followersday 66
- 8,000 followersday 90
- 10,000 followersday 137
That took about 2 hours a day early on. Later it was 8 posts and 400 replies a day, around 6 hours. You can grow on far less, just slower. Why 8,000 to 10,000 slowed down is in how I grew from 1k to 10k followers.
How to get followers on X at each stage
What works changes with your size. Here is the job and the daily target for each stage.
| Followers | Main job | Daily target |
|---|---|---|
| 0 to 100 | Get noticed in conversations | 5 real replies, 1 post |
| 100 to 1,000 | Reply more, find posts that work | 20 to 100 replies, 1 to 2 posts |
| 1,000 to 10,000 | Let your posts carry more | Keep replying, 2+ posts |
Stage 1: 0 to 100 followers
At zero, your profile and your replies are all that matter.
- 1
Fix your profile first.
A real photo and a bio that says what you post about. Have five useful posts up and pin one that says who you are. The free bio grader rates your bio. - 2
Reply to five fresh posts a day.
Search your topic, open the Latest tab and pick posts from the last two hours. Add something real. - 3
Post once a day.
So visitors find something new and early followers have a reason to stay. - 4
Reply again when someone answers.
One real back-and-forth is worth more than ten quick comments.
The full routine, with search strings to paste, is in how to get your first 100 followers on X.
Stage 2: 100 to 1,000 followers
This is where reply volume pays off.
- 1
Raise your replies step by step.
I did 50 to 100 a day. Go from 5 to 20, then higher once it feels easy. Never rush them into copy-paste. - 2
Reply to accounts 2 to 10 times your size.
Same niche, active, still answering replies. Their readers are the people you want. - 3
Post questions and real milestones.
These reached the most people on my account. The ranking of nine post types is in what to post on X to get followers. - 4
Answer every reply in the first hour.
A post with a live conversation keeps getting shown.
I documented this stage in how I gained 100 followers a day on X.
Stage 3: 1,000 to 10,000 followers
Replies still do most of the work up to about 5,000. After that, your posts start to carry you. Across 918 ClimbX accounts, the typical post got 180 views at 1,000 to 4,999 followers and 1,149 at 5,000 or more.
- 1
Post more, but keep it short.
I went to about 8 posts a day. My posts of 10 words or fewer reached the most people. - 2
Keep replying.
Fewer than before, but every day. They still bring new people in. - 3
Change the shape when growth stalls.
A new series, an A-or-B question, a real number from your work. Posting more of the same did not help me.

How to gain followers on Twitter fast
The fastest honest lever is more good replies, earlier. A reply in the first hour of a post from a bigger account sits near the top while people are still reading.
so true, love this 🔥
we cut our pricing page to one plan last month. trials went up 20%, but more people asked for a cheaper tier. did you see that too?
The second reply adds a real result and asks the author something easy to answer. That is what makes readers tap your name.
Speed has a limit. X counts copy-paste and off-topic replies as spam. More in can replying too much get you flagged on X.
What does not get you followers on X
Most shortcuts add a number or cost you reach. Some break X’s rules.
Works
- Specific replies on fresh posts in your niche
- A bio that says what you post about
- Short questions and real milestones
- Answering replies under your own posts
- Showing up every day
Does not work
- Buying followers
- Follow-for-follow and follow-unfollow
- Stacking hashtags
- Links in your main post
- Tools that auto-follow or auto-like
Buying followers. X’s authenticity policy bans paying others to inflate your follows. Bought accounts never reply, and they drag your engagement rate down. More in should you buy Twitter followers.
Follow-for-follow. The same policy bans follow churn: following and then unfollowing lots of accounts to grow your count. People who follow back ignore your posts.
Hashtags. This is old Twitter advice. Only 0.3% of my 1,189 posts used one, and the account still grew from 2,562 to 11,806 followers in that time.
Links. My 89 posts with a link had a median of 1,695 impressions, against 2,884 for all my posts. That is 41% fewer people. Put the link in a reply or your bio.
Auto-follow tools. X’s automation rules ban automated likes and bulk following. They also ban apps that claim to get you more followers. Tools that help you write and find posts are a different thing. How they compare is in the best X growth tools.
Not gaining followers on X? Run this check
Find the step that breaks, then fix only that. Look at your last two weeks.
| What you see | Likely cause | Fix |
|---|---|---|
| Your replies get no likes or answers | Too late or too generic | Reply in the first hour. Add a number or an example. |
| Replies get likes, but no new followers | Profile does not say what you post | Rewrite your bio. Pin a post about what you do. |
| Your posts get very few views | Too small yet, or links and repeats | Compare to normal for your size |
| Followers drop overnight | X removed bots that followed you | Check who actually left |
| Growth stalled after a good run | Your readers have seen this shape | Try a new format, not more posts. |
Your weekly follower check
- Did I reply to people in my niche every day this week?
- Did at least some replies get an answer from the author?
- Does my bio say what I post about in one line?
- Did my main posts stay free of links?
- Which post type got the most replies? Do more of it next week.
Common questions
How do I get more followers on Twitter fast?
Reply early to fresh posts from bigger accounts in your niche. Add a number, an example or a sharp question. Make sure your profile says what you post about. I did 50 to 100 replies a day plus a few posts, about 2 hours a day, and reached 1,000 followers in 33 days. Fast means weeks, not days.
How many followers can you gain in a month on X?
It depends on your daily effort and where you start. My new account reached 1,000 followers in its first 33 days. Later each 1,000 took 6 to 9 days, up to 8,000. With five real replies a day instead of 50, expect a slower start.
Does X Premium get you more followers?
Not directly. X says every paid tier ranks your replies higher, more on higher tiers. It promises no extra reach for your own posts. Across ClimbX accounts with 100 to 499 followers, those with a blue check had a median of 56 impressions per post, against 50 without. A good reply habit matters more than the badge.
Should you buy followers on X?
No. X’s authenticity policy bans paying others to inflate your follows. Bought followers do not read, reply or buy. They also make your engagement rate look worse, and they can vanish in X’s bot cleanups.
Does follow-for-follow work on X?
It adds a number, not readers. People who follow for a follow back do not care about your topic. Following and unfollowing lots of accounts to grow your count is "follow churn" in X’s rules, and it is not allowed.
Do hashtags help you get followers on X?
Not in my experience. Only 0.3% of my 1,189 posts used a hashtag, and the account grew from 2,562 to 11,806 followers in that time. X’s rules also count excessive, unrelated hashtags as spam. Use one only when it ties the post to a real event.
How often should I post to gain followers on X?
Start with one or two good posts a day, plus replies. That is enough to grow and to learn what works. I posted about eight a day between 1k and 10k, but that came after the reply habit, not instead of it.
Why am I not gaining followers on X?
Usually one of four things: too few replies in other people’s conversations, replies that add nothing, a profile that does not say what you post about, or posts with links that nobody sees. Run the check in this guide to find which one.
Get followers without giving up your voice.
ClimbX drafts posts and replies in your voice from what works for accounts a little ahead of you. You edit and approve every one. It never likes, follows or DMs for you. From $29/month.
