The short version
An X Professional account is a free setting that turns a personal account into a business or creator profile. You get a category label, Profile Spotlights, Professional Home, Quick Promote and X Shopping. You can switch back any time.
It does not give you a checkmark, more reach or payouts. Those come from X Premium and from what you post. If you use X for work, switch. It costs nothing.

X Professional account vs personal account
The switch changes your profile and adds a few business tools. It does not change how your posts are written, shown or ranked. Here is what each type gets, from X’s own Professional Accounts page:
| Personal | Professional | |
|---|---|---|
| Cost | Free | Free |
| Category label on profile (e.g. Software Company) | No | Yes |
| Profile Spotlights (link, location, shop) | No | Yes |
| Professional Home dashboard | No | Yes, 28 days of analytics |
| Quick Promote from a post | No | Yes |
| X Ads Manager | Yes | Yes |
| X Shopping | No | Some qualifying accounts |
| Checkmark | Only with Premium | Only with Premium |
| Original Content Rewards | Only with Premium | Only with Premium |
| Published reach boost | No | No |

Three separate decisions people mix up
People get confused about “business accounts” on X because they mix up three different things. Each one is separate, and you can have any combination.
| Decision | What it is | Cost |
|---|---|---|
| Professional account | An account type: category label, Spotlights, Professional Home, Quick Promote | Free |
| X Premium | A subscription: blue checkmark, longer posts, reply boost, payouts eligibility | $8/mo in the US ($3 Basic, $40 Premium+) |
| Premium Business or Organizations | A subscription for organizations: gold or grey checkmark, affiliate badges, VIP support | Separate pricing |
X’s profile labels page makes the same point. You pick a Professional category label yourself, and X does not check it. A gold checkmark means an official organization account through Premium Business. Should your brand post from a founder account, a company account or both? That is a fourth decision, covered in founder vs company X account.
Should you switch to a Professional account?
| Your situation | Switch? |
|---|---|
| Founder, freelancer or creator who posts about work | Yes; pick Creator |
| Company, shop or product account | Yes; pick Business |
| Local business with an address and opening hours | Yes, for the Location Spotlight |
| You want to boost a post now and then | Yes, for Quick Promote |
| Personal account you use for fun | No need |
| Parody, fan or anonymous character account | Not eligible |
| You hope it fixes low reach | It will not; see below |
For a founder or creator, the most visible gain is the category label under your name. Someone landing on your profile from a reply sees what you do in one glance, before they read your bio. Pair it with a bio that says who you help. The free X Bio Grader checks yours.
Who can get a Professional account
X’s Professional account policy has three requirements. If you do not meet them, you cannot switch. X can also pause the features later if you stop qualifying.
Before you switch
- No history of repeatedly breaking the X User Agreement.
- A complete profile: account name, bio and profile picture.
- Your real identity is clear. No impersonation, no parody or fan accounts, no animals or fictional characters unless tied to your brand.
How to switch to a Professional account
- 1Open the menuProfile settings, or X for Professionals in the app sidebar
- 2Switch to ProfessionalThen select Get started
- 3Pick a categorySearch if yours is not in the first list
- 4Creator or BusinessClosest to how you present yourself
After the last step X offers to customize your profile, pick Topics and promote a post. You can skip all three and come back through the X for Professionals menu later. You can only convert an existing account. X does not let you sign up as Professional from the start.
How to switch back to a personal account
- 1
Go to your profile and select Edit profile
On the app or x.com. - 2
Select Edit professional profile
You can also change your category here at any time. - 3
Select Switch account type
Then pick the type you want. Your posts and followers stay.
Does a Professional account change your reach?
Not according to anything X publishes. The features cover your profile, ads and analytics. None of them boosts ranking. The one line about reach goes the other way. The policy says X can limit how far a Professional account is recommended to people who do not follow it, if it breaks the rules.
Professional accounts and getting paid
Payouts depend on your subscription. Account type does not matter. X lists Original Content Rewards and Creator Subscriptions under Premium and Premium+. Personal and Professional accounts can both apply once they hit the thresholds. Today’s thresholds are in X Original Content Rewards. The monetization requirements checker tells you how far off you are.
Professional Home vs other tools
Professional Home shows the last 28 days of account analytics plus links to promotion and monetization. X still describes it as rolling out, so some Professional accounts do not see it yet. Want to watch many feeds at once? That is X Pro, a different product that now needs Premium+. The options are in TweetDeck alternatives.
ClimbX works the same on a personal or Professional account. It drafts posts in your voice, based on what works for accounts a few times your size. It also finds posts worth replying to. You edit and approve what goes out. It never likes, follows or DMs for you, and never replies to other people for you.
Frequently asked questions
What is an X Professional account?
A free account type for businesses, creators and publishers. Switching adds a category label on your profile, Profile Spotlights, Professional Home with 28 days of analytics, Quick Promote and X Shopping. Your posts, followers and handle stay the same.
Is an X Professional account free?
Yes. X says converting to a Professional account is completely free. It is separate from X Premium, which is the paid subscription with the checkmark.
Does a Professional account get more reach on X?
X does not say it does. None of the listed Professional features is a reach boost. X’s policy does say it can limit how far a Professional account is recommended to non-followers if it breaks the rules.
Can I switch back from a Professional account to a personal account?
Yes, at any time. Go to your profile, select Edit profile, then Edit professional profile, then Switch account type, and pick the type you want.
Do I need a Professional account to get paid on X?
No. X lists Original Content Rewards and Creator Subscriptions under the Premium and Premium+ subscriptions, not under Professional accounts. Premium is what you need, plus the eligibility thresholds.
Should I choose Creator or Business?
Creator if the account is a person who posts for work, such as a founder, writer or consultant. Business if the account represents a company, shop or brand. Pick whichever is closest to how you present yourself; X asks you to choose one during the switch.
The label tells people what you do. Your posts make them follow.
ClimbX drafts ten posts a day in your voice and finds conversations worth joining in your niche. Switching account type takes a minute; this is the part that grows you.
