Who can edit a tweet
Edit post is a Premium feature, listed under “features available to every Premium tier” on X’s About X Premium page. In the US that means Basic at $3 a month, Premium at $8 or Premium+ at $40. If editing is all you want, Basic is enough. Wondering if a higher tier pays off for growth? The Premium calculator and which Premium features are worth paying for cover that.
Free accounts have no edit button. If you do not plan to pay, check each post before it goes out. The rest of this guide shows how.
How to edit a post on X
- 1Open the postOn the device you posted from
- 2Tap the more iconThree dots, top right of the post

You can add, delete or fix text. You can also reorder or tag the media you attached. The device rule catches people out. Post from the iPhone app and you have to edit from the iPhone app. Post on x.com and you edit on x.com, per X’s Edit post help page.
The edit window and number of edits
The Help Center says 1 hour and 5 edits. One X page says something else. The history shows why:
| When | Window | Edits | Source |
|---|---|---|---|
| Sep 2022 (launch) | 30 minutes | 5 | TechCrunch |
| Jun 2023 | 1 hour | 5 | TechCrunch |
| Oct 2026, Help Center | 1 hour | 5 | X Help |
| Oct 2026, developer docs | 30 minutes | 5 | docs.x.com |
Posts you cannot edit
No edit button on these
- Replies to other posts.
- Threads. Once you reply to your own post, the original locks too.
- Polls.
- Pinned posts.
- Promoted posts (ads).
- Subscriber-only posts.
- Posts sent from X Pro.
- Posts sent from a third-party app or scheduler.
List from About Edit Post. The thread rule is from X Premium how to. Both checked October 12, 2026. X’s developer docs add scheduled, Community and collaborative posts. So if you schedule a post, in X or any other tool, plan on not being able to edit it.
What readers see after you edit
Edits are public. The post gets an edited icon and a “Last edited” time. Anyone can click it and read every earlier version. There is no private edit, and no way to clear the history.
| What happens | After an edit | Source |
|---|---|---|
| Edited label | Shown to everyone | X Help |
| Earlier versions | Anyone can open them | X Help |
| Likes, replies, reposts so far | Kept | X Help |
| Post ID | Each edit creates a new ID, linked to the original | docs.x.com |
| Metrics per version | Counted on the version visible when the engagement happened | docs.x.com |
| Deleting later | Deleting any version deletes the whole chain | docs.x.com |
X does not say if people who already liked or replied get told about the edit. It also does not say how quotes of your post show the change. Replies stay where they are, under the new text. So if an edit changes your point, earlier replies can end up answering something you no longer say.
Edit, delete and repost, or Undo post?
| Option | Keeps engagement | Visible trace | Who has it |
|---|---|---|---|
| Edit post | Yes | Edited label and full history | Premium, within 1 hour |
| Delete and repost | No, starts at zero | None on the new post | Everyone |
| Undo post | Nothing to keep yet | None, the post is private until it sends | Premium, 5 to 60 second delay |
Undo post is the one people forget. It holds your post for 5 to 60 seconds before anyone sees it. It is on by default for Premium, per X Premium how to. That catches most typos, with no edited label at all.
A simple rule: if the post already has replies, edit. If it has nothing yet and the mistake is in the first line, delete and repost within a minute or two. That costs you almost nothing. Just do not make a habit of it. X lists “posting and deleting the same content repeatedly” as content spam in its authenticity policy.
For creators: fix a typo, never change the point
X built editing “to fix things like typos, add missed tags, and more,” as it said at the 2022 launch (TechCrunch). Its rules also say what is not allowed. The authenticity policy bans editing to reuse a post’s engagement for substantially different content. It also bans editing a link so it points somewhere significantly different. X even gives an example:
What’s better? Pancakes or waffles?
Thousands of people trust my service. Like my post and subscribe to my channel to get tips on investing
X’s own example of deceptive editing, from its authenticity policy. Penalties include restricted reach, losing access to Edit post, and suspension for severe cases.
| Safe edit | Risky edit |
|---|---|
| Fix a typo or a wrong number | Flip your opinion after the replies come in |
| Tag someone you forgot | Swap the topic once the post takes off |
| Reorder or fix an image | Add a sales pitch to a post that is doing well |
| Add a missing word for clarity | Change a link to a different site |
Does editing a tweet affect reach?
Nothing X publishes says an honest edit lowers reach. Its open-source For You code, xai-org/x-algorithm, lists no edit signal in its ranking or filter overview. It ranks posts on predicted reactions like replies and reposts. It filters out posts older than 48 hours. So a typo fix should not matter. The one documented reach risk is the deceptive edit above. For that, X lists restricted reach as a penalty.
The first hour matters more than any edit. That is when replies come in. Spend it answering them, not rewriting the post. Get it right before you hit Post. The free character counter shows where your text gets cut off, and how to write a good tweet covers the rest. ClimbX helps here too. It drafts posts in your voice. You edit and approve every one before it goes out, so you fix things before anyone sees them.
Frequently asked questions
Can you edit a tweet on X?
Yes, if you subscribe to X Premium. Every tier, including Basic, can edit original posts and quotes up to 5 times within 1 hour of posting. Free accounts cannot edit. They can only delete and post again.
How long do you have to edit a post on X?
One hour, according to X’s Help Center (checked October 12, 2026). X’s developer documentation still says 30 minutes, which was the original window from 2022. Twitter doubled it to one hour in June 2023.
Can people see the original tweet after you edit it?
Yes. An edited post shows an edited label. Anyone can click it to see every earlier version. There is no way to hide the edit history.
Do you lose likes and replies when you edit a post?
No. X says you keep the engagement of past versions when you edit. Deleting and reposting starts the new post from zero.
Why can’t I edit my tweet?
Common reasons: you are not on Premium, the hour has passed or you used all 5 edits. You may be on a different device than the one you posted from. Or the post is a reply, thread, poll, pinned post, promoted post, subscriber post or scheduled post, or it was sent from X Pro or a third-party app.
Does editing a tweet hurt its reach?
X does not say it does. The overview of its open-source For You code lists no edit signal in its ranking or filters. What X does say: editing a post into substantially different content to reuse its engagement breaks its authenticity policy, and that can restrict reach.
The best edit is the one you make before posting.
ClimbX drafts posts in your voice, based on what works for accounts a few times your size. You edit every draft before it goes live.
