How it works

  1. 1

Type or paste your post. The count and the ring update with every keystroke.

  2. 2

Pick your limit. Use 280 for a standard post, or switch to 25,000 if you have X Premium.

  3. 3

Trim until it fits. Watch the remaining count, check the preview, then copy the post into X.

How X counts characters

X does not count the way your text editor does. It uses weighted counting, and this counter uses the same rules.

  • Letters, numbers, spaces, punctuation and line breaks count as 1.
  • Every link counts as 23, because X shortens it with t.co. A long tracking URL costs the same as a short one.
  • Most emoji count as 2, including combined ones like family or skin-tone emoji.
  • Chinese, Japanese and Korean characters count as 2.
  • Standard posts allow 280. X Premium allows long posts up to 25,000, but the timeline folds them after about 280.
  • Other fields have their own limits: 160 characters for a bio, 50 for a display name, 10,000 for a DM.

Common questions

What is the character limit on Twitter (X)?
A standard post can hold 280 characters. X Premium subscribers can publish posts of up to 25,000 characters. Either way, the timeline shows roughly the first 280 and hides the rest behind Show more.
Why is my count different from a normal character counter?
X weighs characters. Every link counts as 23 no matter how long it is, and most emoji and Chinese, Japanese and Korean characters count as 2. A plain counter reads string length, so it can be off by a lot on posts with links or emoji.
Do spaces and line breaks count?
Yes. Each space and each line break counts as one character, the same as a letter.
Do @mentions and hashtags count toward the limit?
Yes. Mentions and hashtags you type count like any other text. On a reply, the handles X adds automatically at the top are not part of your 280.
What happens if my post is over the limit?
X will not let you post it. Cut words, swap a long phrase for a short one, or split the post into a thread. The thread maker splits a long draft into numbered posts that each fit.
Is my text saved anywhere?
No. Counting happens in your browser. Nothing is uploaded, and the text is gone when you close the page.
