Twitter GIF Downloader: Save X GIFs as MP4

This Twitter GIF downloader saves the GIF from any public post as an MP4 in the quality X stores. Paste the link and tap Download. Works on phones and desktop.

Works with x.com, twitter.com and mobile.twitter.com links.

How to download a GIF from Twitter

  1. 1

Copy the link to the post with the GIF. On X, tap Share, then Copy link.

  2. 2

Paste it above and tap Find GIF. The tool finds the GIF and shows a preview.

  3. 3

Tap Download MP4. You get the original file in the size X keeps, with nothing added.

  4. 4

Save or convert it. Keep the MP4 as it is, or turn it into a .gif if the place you share it needs one.

Why X GIFs save as MP4

X converts every GIF to a short MP4 video when it is uploaded and plays that video on a loop. There is no .gif file left on X's servers, so the MP4 is the original. It is also the better file: smaller, smoother, and it plays in every gallery, chat app and editor.

Save a Twitter GIF to your phone

  • iPhone and iPad. Tap Download and confirm if Safari asks. The file goes to the Files app, under Downloads. Open it there, tap Share and choose Save Video to move it into Photos.
  • Android. Chrome saves the file to your Downloads folder. Open it from the download notification or the Files app, and your gallery shows it from there.
  • Inside the X app. X opens links in its own browser, which often cannot save files. Tap the menu in the corner, choose Open in browser, and download from Safari or Chrome.
  • Desktop. The file lands in your Downloads folder, named climbx-, the post id and the quality.

Use it fairly

Download only posts you made yourself or have permission to use. Saving a clip for yourself is one thing; reposting someone else's work as your own is another. When in doubt, ask the creator and credit them.

Twitter GIF downloader questions

Is this Twitter GIF downloader free?
Yes. No signup, no watermark and no app. There is a fair-use cap of 60 post lookups and 120 file downloads per connection per day.
Why does the GIF download as an MP4?
Because X stores it that way. Every GIF uploaded to X is converted to a short looping MP4 video, and no .gif file is kept. The MP4 you get is the original file X plays.
Does the MP4 lose quality?
No. It is the same file X serves, not a re-encoded copy. MP4 is also far smaller than the same clip as a GIF.
Will the MP4 loop like a GIF?
Most video players play it once. Turn on loop in your player, or convert it back to a GIF if the place you share it needs one.
How do I turn the MP4 back into a GIF?
Use any video to GIF converter. On iPhone, the Shortcuts app has a Make GIF action that takes a video from Photos. Expect the GIF to be several times larger than the MP4.
