How Twitter and X count your 280 characters

A normal character counter is not enough for X. JavaScript string length can overcount emoji, undercount CJK text, and charge every character in a long URL. This tool uses the official twitter-text weighting model instead.

Most text counts as 1

Latin letters, numbers, spaces, punctuation, mentions, and hashtags use their normal weighted length.

Every URL counts as 23

X wraps links with t.co, so a long tracking URL costs the same as a short link.

Emoji and CJK often count as 2

The official weighting rules handle Unicode and combined emoji more accurately than raw string length.

What should appear before Show more?

Treat the first 280 weighted characters as a post inside your post. A reader should understand the topic, feel the tension, and know why the next paragraph is worth a click before the timeline hides anything.

  • Put the main claim or question in the opening lines.
  • Make the tension clear before adding background.
  • Avoid spending the visible section on setup alone.
  • Use the preview in collapsed mode before you publish.

If you are deciding how long the full post should be, read our guide to tweet length and engagement.

Preview the cutoff. Then improve what comes before it.

ClimbX helps you turn the visible section into a stronger hook using patterns from your own best posts, then lets you edit every word before publishing.

Twitter character counter questions

What is the Twitter or X character limit?
A standard X post can contain up to 280 weighted characters. X Premium subscribers can publish long-form posts of up to 25,000 characters, but followers initially see only the opening section in the timeline. The rest sits behind Show more. This tool lets you keep writing past 280 so you can preview that Premium long-post experience.
Where does Twitter or X add Show more to a long post?
X treats the first roughly 280 weighted characters as the visible timeline section of a Premium long-form post. Once your draft crosses that boundary, this preview collapses it immediately and adds Show more. Click Show more to inspect the full post, then Show less to return to the timeline view.
Why can the preview stop at 274 / 280 instead of exactly 280?
The weighted boundary may land inside a word. This preview moves back to the nearest sensible word or line-break boundary when it is close enough, so readers do not see half a word before Show more. The label reports the exact weighted length that remains visible.
Do URLs count toward the Twitter character limit?
Yes, but X does not use the raw length of the URL. Every detected URL counts as 23 weighted characters because links are wrapped through the t.co shortener. A short homepage URL and a long tracking URL therefore consume the same amount of space in your post.
How do emoji and CJK characters count on X?
Most regular Latin letters, numbers, spaces, and punctuation count as one. Most emoji and Chinese, Japanese, and Korean characters count as two. Combined emoji sequences are handled using the official twitter-text rules rather than JavaScript string length, which is why the weighted total can differ from the raw character total.
Is this Twitter and X character counter accurate?
The counter uses the official twitter-text weighting rules for text, Unicode, emoji, and 23-character URLs. The timeline preview is still an approximation because X can adjust its interface, fonts, and spacing, but the weighted 280-character boundary is the closest dependable model for when a Premium long post moves behind Show more.
Does ClimbX store the post I type here?
No. Counting, truncation, copying, and previewing happen locally in your browser. The page does not upload your draft, require an X connection, or ask you to sign in. Refresh or close the page and the text is gone.
