To quote tweet on X, open the post, tap or click the Repost icon, choose "Repost as Quote," write your comment, and select Repost. The original post is embedded under your text and does not count toward your character limit. The steps are the same on the web, iPhone and Android apps.

How do you quote a post on X?
X now calls a quote tweet a quote post, and the button sits inside the Repost menu rather than having its own icon.
On the web (x.com)
- Hover over the post you want to share.
- Click the Repost button.
- Click Repost as Quote.
- Write your comment. You can add one GIF, up to four photos, or a video.
- Click Repost.
On iPhone and Android
- Go to the post you want to share.
- Tap the Repost icon.
- Tap Repost as Quote.
- Add your comment and any media.
- Tap Repost.
You can also quote your own older posts. X suggests this for posts that have become relevant again.
What happens after you quote a post?
- Your quote is your own post. It appears on your profile and in your followers' timelines, with the original shown underneath.
- The original author can find it. X lists every quote on a post under the post's Quote posts tab, and activity on your posts, including reposts, shows in Notifications.
- Replies stay with you. When someone replies to your quote, X does not automatically add the original author to that conversation. Mention their username if you want them in it.
- The original does not use your characters. X's Help Center states the quoted post does not count toward the character limit, so you keep the full 280 characters for your comment.
Premium subscribers can write longer quotes. X says longer posts of up to 25,000 characters can also be composed in a quote or reply. The full breakdown of limits is in our guide to the Twitter character limit.
Quote, repost or reply: which should you use?

The practical difference is audience. A reply mostly reaches people already reading that post. A quote goes to your own followers first.
Can you pin someone else's post to your profile?
No. X's instructions for pinning start from your own profile, and its glossary describes pinning "one of your posts." A repost of someone else's post is not yours, so it cannot be pinned.
The workaround is a quote. Because a quote post is your own post, you can pin it:
- Quote the post you want to feature and add a line on why it matters.
- Go to your profile and find the quote.
- Click or tap the more icon at the top of the post.
- Select Pin to your profile, then confirm with Pin.
Visitors then see the original post inside your pinned quote. If the original is later deleted or its account is suspended, the embedded post can disappear, so check your pin now and then.
Why can't I quote a post?
- The account is protected. X says posts from protected accounts cannot be reposted by anyone, including followers who can see them.
- The post was restricted. X's enforcement options include restricting likes, replies, reposts and quotes on posts that violate its rules.
- Your own account is limited. An account in a read-only state cannot post, repost or like until the restriction ends.
X also says it can take action on quote posts that reproduce a post which violates its rules. Quoting a rule-breaking post can put your own post in scope.
How do you edit or delete a quote?
To delete a quote, go to your profile, find the quote, open the more menu at the top of the post, choose Delete Post and confirm. X notes that deleted quotes can still appear briefly in cached timelines or on third-party sites.
Premium subscribers can edit a quote. X's Edit post feature gives a one-hour window for a limited number of changes and applies to original posts and quotes.
What makes a quote worth posting?
A quote earns its place when your comment adds something the original does not have: a counterpoint, a number from your own work, or the question it raises for your niche. "This" or "so true" adds nothing your followers could not get from a plain repost.
This matters for monetized accounts too. X's Original Content Rewards policy treats commentary and analysis as legitimate original expression, but content where your contribution is minimal does not generate qualified impressions.

Does the original author get notified when I quote them?
