The Twitter (X) character limit is 280 characters per post for free accounts. X Premium subscribers can write longer posts of up to 25,000 characters.
Every link counts as 23 characters, every emoji counts as 2, and attached photos or videos count as 0. Bios allow 160 characters, display names 50 and usernames 15.

How does X count characters?
X uses weighted counting, documented in its developer docs. Most Latin letters, numbers, punctuation and common symbols count as 1. Emojis, Chinese, Japanese and Korean characters, and most other Unicode ranges count as 2.
A few rules catch people out:
- Every emoji is 2, however complex. A skin-tone emoji or a family sequence joined with zero-width joiners still counts as 2.
- Every link is 23. A short domain and a 200-character tracking URL cost the same.
- Auto-filled @mentions in replies are free. The handles X adds at the start of a reply do not count. Mentions you type yourself count normally.
- Hashtags count in full. The # and every letter after it use characters.
- Accented letters count once. X normalizes text so "café" counts as 4 characters whichever way the é was typed.

How do longer posts work with X Premium?
X's Premium page says subscribers on every tier, including Basic, can post up to 25,000 characters. Everyone can read longer posts; only subscribers can create them. When you pass 280 characters, the counter circle in the composer switches from tracing its edge to filling in.
There are limits worth knowing before you write one:
- X's help page for posting from the iOS and Android apps lists 4,000 characters as the in-app maximum. The 25,000 figure is listed for the web composer.
- X says you currently cannot save a draft of a longer post or schedule one on the web.
- Accounts you mention after the first 280 characters are not notified. If you limit replies to people you mention, those mentions must be in the first 280 characters.
- The first 280 characters still do the most work, because that is where mentions notify people and where readers decide whether to keep going.

What are the limits for your bio, name and handle?
Bio: 160 characters. X's profile help page lists the bio at a maximum of 160 characters. Links added in the Website field are separate from the bio.
Display name: 50 characters. This is the name shown above your handle, and unlike the username it is not restricted to letters, numbers and underscores.
Username: 15 characters. Your @handle can only use letters A to Z, numbers 0 to 9 and underscores. It cannot contain "X" or "Admin" unless it is an official X account.
One Premium-specific rule: changing your profile photo, display name or username removes the blue checkmark until X reviews the account again, and no further changes are allowed during that review.
Should you use all 280 characters?
