What counts as a good engagement rate
The benchmark is the founder’s own account: 1,184 original posts from May to September 2026, each with its latest stored metrics. It is one build-in-public account that posts about eight times a day, so read it as a reference point, not an industry norm.

The same account’s biggest posts sit below its median. Its first-payout post had 62,326 impressions at 3.43%, and a 1.36 million impression post landed near 1%. Reach and rate pull in opposite directions, so track both.
How it works
- 1
Copy the numbers under your post. Impressions, likes, replies, reposts and bookmarks. Open the post on X to see all five.
- 2
Read the rate by impressions. Engagements divided by impressions, as a percentage. It measures how many of the people who saw the post acted on it.
- 3
Compare posts with each other. Add followers for the per-follower rate if a sponsor or report asks for it. The per-impression rate is the better tool for deciding what to post next.
What it does not do
- It does not read your account. You type the numbers.
- It leaves out clicks, which X analytics includes, so X will show a higher figure.
- The benchmark is one founder account in the build-in-public niche. Other niches and larger accounts run lower or higher.
Twitter engagement rate: common questions
- What is the Twitter engagement rate formula?
- Engagement rate by impressions = (likes + replies + reposts + quotes + bookmarks) / impressions x 100. Engagement rate by followers uses the same engagements divided by your follower count. The impressions version tells you how well a post held the people who actually saw it, which is why this calculator leads with it.
- What is a good engagement rate on X?
- Across 1,184 original posts from a build-in-public account, the median was 4.14% of impressions. The bottom quarter sat below 3.19%, the top quarter above 5.04%, and the top 10% above 6.01%. Measured by followers instead, brand accounts on X average about 0.10% per post (Socialinsider, 2026, likes and reposts only), which is why follower-based rates look so small.
- Why does my engagement rate drop when a post goes viral?
- A viral post reaches people who do not follow you and have less reason to interact. The biggest post in the benchmark account reached 1,358,843 impressions at about 1% engagement, far below the account median. A falling rate on a big post is normal. Judge a viral post by the replies and follows it brought, not by its rate.
- Why is X analytics showing a higher engagement rate?
- X analytics counts clicks in its Engagements figure: profile clicks, link clicks, media views and post expands. This calculator uses the public counts under the post, so it lands lower. Use one method consistently and compare your posts with each other.
- Does this tool see my account?
- No. It runs in your browser on the numbers you type. Nothing is read from your account and nothing is sent anywhere.
